Greater New York Hospital Association
Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA), founded in 1904, is a one-of-a-kind trade association comprising nearly 300 hospitals and continuing care facilities, both voluntary and public, in the metropolitan New York area and throughout the State, as well as New Jersey, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Over the years, with the help of our members, we have redefined what a trade association is and should be, and have created a dynamic center for discussion and collective advocacy.

Governor Proposes $3.5B in Health Care Cuts

On December 16, Governor Paterson released his budget proposal for SFY 2009–10. The proposal contains unprecedented levels of health care spending cuts and taxes of $3.5 billion, including:

                  • $799 million in hospital cuts,
                  • $424 million in nursing home cuts, and
                  • $190 million in home care cuts.

The cuts, if enacted, would result in layoffs, elimination of health care services, and, in some cases, facility closures.

GNYHA is in the process of analyzing the proposal in more detail. In the meantime, the Healthcare Education Project (HEP), the partnership between GNYHA and 1199 SEIU, has released this preliminary statement 7962 56.3 KB.  Additionally, this Member Letter Bulletin has been distributed to GNYHA member hospitals.

HEP also has launched an advocacy campaign based on the idea of “shared sacrifice”—in order to eliminate the State’s enormous deficit, all sectors of the New York economy and, in fact, all New Yorkers, must contribute their fair share.

GNYHA’s Raske: “Health Care Alone Cannot Carry the Deficit Burden”

On November 13, the Greater New York Hospital Association, led by President Ken Raske, held a meeting to brief the hospital and long term care membership on the current political environment, the impact of Governor Paterson’s proposed cuts, and how the provider community must join together to aggressively advocate for shared responsibility across all sectors for the budget deficit. Mr. Raske noted that, given New York State’s economic situation, no sector can be held harmless from cuts in the upcoming budget discussions.
